Wangian - penyebab kanser

Elakkan pendedahan bertoksik terutamanya kanak-kanak.

Protect Your Family from the Hidden Hazards in Air Fresheners

air1_zpscb0f59db.jpg

Air fresheners have become a staple in many American homes and offices, marketed with the promise of creating a clean, healthy, and sweet-smelling indoor atmosphere. But many of these products contain phthalates (pronounced thal-ates)—hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems.

NRDC’s independent testing of 14 common air fresheners, none of which listed phthalates as an ingredient, uncovered these chemicals in 86 percent (12 of 14) of the products tested, including those advertised as “allnatural” or “unscented.”

To protect consumers, government action to conduct more thorough tests and enact basic measures to limit exposure to phthalates is urgently needed. Until consumers are given the information they need to make informed decisions about whether to use these products, it is best to avoid using air resheners—especially in places where there are children or pregnant women.

Phthalates: Health Hazards in Many Forms

Phthalates are used in many common consumer products—to soften plastics in children’s toys, as sealants and adhesives in nail polish, and in perfumes and air fresheners. When people use air fresheners, the phthalates are released into the air where they may be inhaled or may land on the skin and be absorbed.

Once these chemicals enter the bloodstream, they can alter hormone levels and cause other health problems.

Phthalates are known to interfere with production of the male hormone, testosterone, and have been associated with reproductive abnormalities. Numerous animal studies have linked prenatal exposure to certain phthalates with decreases in testosterone, malformations of the genitalia, and reduced sperm production.

The State of California notes that five types of phthalates—including one that we found in air freshener products—are “known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm.” Phthalate exposure in indoor environments has also been associated with allergic symptoms and asthma.

Improving Your Home’s Air Quality and Safety

air2_zps82a01d3d.jpg

Air fresheners are not a solution for poor air quality and cannot substitute for good ventilation. The best solution is to open windows to bring in fresh air or to use fans to maintain air circulation.

If you decide to use an air freshener, however, careful selection may reduce phthalate exposures to you and your family. The table shows which brands we tested contained phthalates.

Stronger Regulations Are Needed to Protect Consumers

There is a clear need for closer monitoring of the types of chemicals manufacturers are allowed to put into air fresheners—and for consumers to be provided with better information about what is in the products they do purchase.

NRDC recommends the following immediate steps:

- Consumers should avoid using air fresheners, but when necessary should use products with the lowest levels of phthalates to limit exposures to these potentially dangerous chemicals.

- The Environmental Protection Agency should require manufacturers to test and submit data on phthalates found in air fresheners, the extent of human exposure to phthalates in air fresheners, the health effects of the exposure, and the toxicity, persistence, sensitization, and other health effects of inhaling chemicals in air fresheners.

- The Consumer Product Safety Commission should ban phthalates in consumer products and should require that manufacturers provide ingredient information on the label.

According to studies done by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the majority of the U.S. population is routinely exposed to at least five different phthalates. Although the measured levels in the human blood stream are small, they are significant because a mixture of phthalates at low doses can act in an additive manner to cause the same health hazards as just one phthalate at a higher dose.

The difficulty of avoiding general exposure is all the more reason to eliminate further exposure in an environment over which you have much more control—your home.

Toxic effects of air freshener emissions.

Anderson RC, Anderson JH.
Anderson Laboratories, Inc., West Hartford, Vermont 05084, USA.

To evaluate whether emissions of a commercial air freshener produced acute toxic effects in a mammalian species, the authors allowed male Swiss-Webster mice to breathe the emissions of one commercial-brand solid air freshener for 1 h.

Sensory irritation and pulmonary irritation were evaluated with the ASTM-E-981 test. A computerized version of this test measured the duration of the break at the end of inspiration and the duration of the pause at the end of expiration--two parameters subject to alteration via respiratory effects of airborne toxins. Measurements of expiratory flow velocity indicated changes in airflow limitation.

The authors then subjected mice to a functional observational battery, the purpose of which was to probe for changes in nervous system function. Emissions of this air freshener at several concentrations (including concentrations to which many individuals are actually exposed) caused increases in sensory and pulmonary irritation, decreases in airflow velocity, and abnormalities of behavior measured by the functional observational battery score.

The test atmosphere was subjected to gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy, and the authors noted the presence of chemicals with known irritant and neurotoxic properties. The Material Safety Data Sheet for the air freshener indicated that there was a potential for toxic effects in humans. The air freshener used in the study did not diminish the effect of other pollutants tested in combination. The results demonstrated that the air freshener may have actually exacerbated indoor air pollution via addition of toxic chemicals to the atmosphere.

New car smell is toxic, study says: Which cars are worst?

(CBS) Who doesn't love that factory fresh "new car smell"? It's so well-liked that air fresheners and sprays have been produced in attempts to reclaim the odor.

But according to a new study from the nonprofit Ecology Center and HealthyStuff.org, what you might actually be sniffing are toxic fumes from chemicals used to create the car interior.

"Research shows that vehicle interiors contain a unique cocktail of hundreds of toxic chemicals that off-gas in small, confined spaces," Jeff Gearhart, research director at the Ecology Center, said in a written statement. "Since these chemicals are not regulated, consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face. Our testing is intended to expose those dangers and encourage manufacturers to use safer alternatives."

For the study, researchers at the Ecology Center tested more than 200 of the most popular 2011-2012 automobiles for chemicals that "off-gas" from interior car parts such as the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests, and seats. They assigned a "vehicle rating" based on the amount of chemicals they found.

The researchers found more than 275 different chemicals in the interiors of cars. Some chemicals of concern include bromine from brominated flame retardants (BFRs) which are added to plastics to make them less flammable, chlorine used for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used for plastics and windshields, lead, and heavy metals.

The researchers said BFR exposure has been tied to thyroid problems, learning and memory impairment, decreased fertility, and behavioral changes while PVCs which contain chemicals called phthalates are linked to decreased fertility, and problems with the liver, testes, thyroid, ovaries, kidneys, and blood.

Which car did the Ecology Center deem healthiest?

At the top of the list for the most healthy car interior is the 2012 Honda Civic. Researchers gave it a score of 0.46, saying it did not have any bromine-based flame retardants, and used PVC-free fabrics on the interior.

"We're pleased to be recognized by HealthyStuff.org for our efforts," Marcos Frommer, manager of corporate affairs & communications at American Honda, said in the statement. "Over the past decade, Honda has taken a number of steps to reduce or remove chemicals of concern from our vehicles."

The industry trade group Global Automakers and car company Kia Motors America had no comment when reached by HealthPop, and the Auto Alliance, Chrysler Motors, Mitsubishi Motors did not respond for requests for comment at press time.

Not all is bleak about the state of new car smells. The researchers said overall, cars have improved from when they first began testing.

"Since we first started testing in 2006, we've seen an improvement on average in the vehicles that are in the market," Gearhart told CBS Detroit. "So, we know there is a trend toward healthier interiors, but what we really want to see is to see that accelerated."

Today, 17 percent of new vehicles have PVC-free interiors and 60 percent are produced without BFRs, the Ecology Center said. Before 2006, 0 percent of cars had PVC-free interiors.

Some cars scored worse than others. Keep clicking to see the 10 biggest offenders..

How FRESH The Air Freshener??? Are They GOOD For Health???

Quote 1 : Air freshener chemicals have been implicated in cancer, neurological damage, reproductive and developmental disorders, and other conditions. The synthetic chemicals in air fresheners also can aggravate asthma and/or trigger attacks. Researching air freshener/plug-in ingredients from their Material Safety Data Sheets we find that these ingredients are toxic.

Many air fresheners employ carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and known toxins such as phthalate esters in their formulas. A Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) study of 13 common household air fresheners found that most of the surveyed products contain chemicals that can aggravate asthma and affect reproductive development. The NRDC called for more rigorous supervision of the manufacturers and their products, which are widely assumed to be safe

Quote 10 : Our gym installed plug-in air fresheners designed to spray a mist of "air freshening" chemicals periodically. One of them was attached near the ceiling, on a wall that was directly behind all of the treadmills, to ensure that those under the most physical stress, and those breathing the heaviest, would find themselves inhaling a massive blast of chemicals. Did we mention that these things impair lung function to cause extreme shortness of breath, and potentially heart attacks? These things are exactly what need to be placed above treadmills.

We experienced immediate difficulty in breathing when running the treadmills, despite all of us being in excellent condition. We later experienced chest pains and other symptoms of heart problems in unison. We decided that this madness could not continue any longer. This article is comprised of our research efforts in pinning down the problem.

Tanda-tanda anda alami alahan haruman:

Gejala alahan haruman:

Gejalanya mungkin berbeza mengikut masalah kesihatan pesakit tetapi secara umumnya ia membabitkan saluran pernafasan (termasuk hidung) dan mata. Antara alahan yang kerap dialami ialah:

Sakit kepala

Sesak nafas

Bersin

Pernafasan berbunyi kasar dan kuat

Dada terasa ketat

Gejala asma bertambah teruk

Panduan atasi masalah alahan haruman

Jika anda mengesyaki mengalami alahan haruman, hentikan penggunaan produk berkenaan selama dua minggu.
